House Trained: Doing great!
History: Bennie is a super handsome boy who arrived to rescue so heavily matted that he was so uncomfortable- it broke our hearts! He settled into rescue after a much needed groom and look at him now. It is incredible to see his transformation!
A Note from the Foster: I’m so excited you’re interested in adopting Bennie!
He wants nothing more than to be loved, trained and cuddled. We often say his dream is to have a life of leisure as he is happiest when he’s cuddling & playing with his people, running in the yard & house and dancing in circles with a smile.
Potty training: He is still on a potty-training learning path and has been doing great with going outside and on the potty pads. He takes the lead from our 5-year-old dog and runs out the door with him. We try and get him to go outside every 4-5 hours, sometimes he needs a little cuddle as encouragement. He does great overnight in his kennel or in his baby gated puppy suite (aka my office, with puppy pads)
Kennel training: He will need more practice and reassurance that his kennel is a good, safe place for sleeping overnight. We are lucky to have the baby gated room for him to sleep in on his doggy bed and for when we leave home. I work from home, so he has not been left alone a lot. However, when I travel, Bennie is in the kennel during the day.
Eating: Bennie loves to eat! He is still learning all the different types of treat flavors, so does not have a favorite yet. We have been feeding him a ½ cup of dry food 2x daily, in a separate room from our dog.
Leash walking: We've only put a leash on him to go to vet appointments. He is still a work in progress but is eager to learn and please his people. He hasn’t been ready to go on full walks yet, but I think he’ll get there soon with some practice and nicer weather.
Basic training: We’ve been working on the basics with Bennie and have not had a chance for training commands yet.
Areas of improvement/quirks/notes:
• We believe Bennie has lived his life in a kennel up until rescue. Everything is brand new to him, including human interaction and potty training. He has been on an anti-anxiety medication to help him through this big life transition. He is now ready to be loved as he twirls, dances, jumps and give lots of kisses.
• He coexists very well with our resident dog and wants to play and snuggle with him, even though Bennie is about 20 lbs. smaller. Bennie sometimes gets a little possessive of toys, so sometimes toys need a lil timeout.
• He has gotten attached to me and seems to get anxious when I’m not around. He does calm down quickly, but I think he’ll be prone to developing separation anxiety and he’ll need consistent boundaries to overcome that.
• He is a Male, 1 year old, miniature Australian Shepherd mix. He is black with a white chest and a glowing white smile! He currently weighed in at 18 lbs.
• He doesn’t have much of a voice, but I do hear little barks and squeaks when he wants some attention!
• He’s already been neutered, teeth cleaned and checked, had all of his boosters and been chipped. He is completely adoption-ready!
The next steps:
• Please reply all and let us know if Bennie sounds like he'd be a good fit for you and if you're interested in moving forward to the meet and greet and home visit.
• I’m happy to do the home visit and meet & greet either virtually or in person. I can bring him over to your house for both at the same time or you could come to our house if you’re comfortable with that! We are located in River Falls, WI - we could even meet in the middle!
• After the home visit and meet & greet, you'll decide if he's a good fit and if you'd definitely like to move forward with the adoption.
• If you decide to move forward, we will coordinate a time and place to finalize the adoption with the agreements.
Let me know if he sounds like Bennie would be a good fit for you or if you have any questions about him or the adoption process. I'm happy to send you pictures and/or videos of him if you'd like.
*Please remember to reply all to let us know if you're interested in moving forward with the next steps in the process.
Thank you - I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Adoption Fee: $550 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
