History: Mauna Loa is a beautiful and ultra sweet who needed a second chance and an escape out of the commercial breeding world. She would make a wonderful addition to a lucky home of her very own soon!
She also has a heart murmur and here is more information from our veterinary team:
Chronic mitral valve disease is the most common cardiac condition seen in dogs. It is mostly, but not exclusively, a disease of smaller breed dogs, and is seen in middle-age or geriatric dogs.
Chronic mitral valve disease is caused by degeneration of the mitral valves, the valves on the left side of the heart between the left atrium and left ventricle. The degenerative process causes the valves to thicken and retract, creating a hole through which blood can flow back from the left ventricle into the left atrium when the left ventricle contracts. This backflow of blood is audible as a murmur.
Approximately 10 percent of older small-breed dogs have chronic mitral valve disease. The good news is that although the disease is common, approximately 75 percent of dogs that develop this condition will ultimately die of something else because the disease progresses slowly in many dogs.
Most dogs with chronic mitral valve disease have no clinical signs, especially while the disease is mild and the X rays are normal. In most cases, a veterinarian will presumptively diagnose this condition based on three things: 1) an older, 2) small-breed dog with a 3) characteristic left-sided murmur.
A note from the foster: She is so absolutely sweet and twice as shy.
Her perfect forever home would be someone with patience and understanding of where she came from. She needs her achievements celebrated and someone who will remember she is a work in progress.
I believe she would do well as an only dog, but having another confident female dog similar in size would definitely help her learn the ropes and come out of her shell.
She has yet to play with a toy or get excited for anything other than food. Her tail wags once in awhile.. I think she forgets and lets her guard down and then it happens spontaneously. 💕
She takes a bit to settle down in her kennel and it seems like she would enjoy sleeping with her person. She gets on a lap and never wants to leave. 💜
We will continue to work with her and hope to see the real Mauna Loa shine! She is very easy to have around.
Her spay and dental are still scheduled for the 28th. She is great with my Grandchildren and others who stop by.
Adoption Fee: $500 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
