History: Oakley is such a handsome young lab mix who makes friends with anyone he meets. He has an A+ personality and needed a second chance from a rural area. He arrived to rescue eager and ready to find his forever family soon!
Oakley also has a VERY mild case of Megaesophagus (ME) which is a disorder in which the esophagus gets larger in size and consequently loses its ability to transport food. He has shown no signs of regurgitation with the following easy steps:
1. Feed pre-softened kibbles - just soak in water overnight!
2. Feed two times daily - he needs to eat in an upright position to ensure gravity moves the food through his esophagus! At our house he eats off the dining room table, his front paws on a low stool. He was very easily trained to do so!!! (see Pic below)
3. Water should be given as ice when he is super thirsty after playing/running - drinking too much too fast causes coughing.
A note from the foster: Oakley, is the perfect dog both for an active family with or without kids. He fit right into a family with two kids and a resident retriever, as well as a family of two adults without kids or pets and finally a single gal with two Huskies. He is SO adaptable to various situations! He loves snuggles, gives kisses (LOTS of kisses), sniffing around the yard, and walks around the neighborhood - both long and short. He enjoys lake life, coffee shops, and breweries. He’s always happy to meet other dogs, loves car rides & is up for any adventure you have in mind!
Here are some fun facts about Oakley:
• He is house trained! He waits at the door when he needs to go outside.
• He is crate trained! He happily goes into his crate for naps and overnights.
• He is a total gentleman on a leash! He must be on a harness due to his condition, and he walks so well on it.
• He sits on command immediately! “Leave it”, “stop”, “go potty” are also commands he knows pretty well. And we are working on his recall as well. He is super food motivated, which helps with training.
• He’s great in a car!
• He has the most adorable little underbite!
• Everyone who meets him comments on how chill & friendly he is!
Adoption Fee: $550 + tax
Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
