History: We received a local plea to help a litter of teenage English Labs from an outdoor living situation. They are social kiddos who do really well with other dogs. They are learning basic obedience, manners, and how to live in the home however they are extremely smart dogs who are learning very quickly. They are each hoping to find forever homes of their very own soon!
From the vet team- we suspect that Oscar has early retinal detachment. The retina is a like a thin film layer lining the back of the eye made up light-sensitive cells and other processing cells. These cells job is to make the light it receives into a picture the brain can understand. Retinal detachment means these cells are becoming detached from the back of the eye. We suspect Oscar is in the early stages of this. In clinic on his exam he did not show any vision loss yet. Dogs with this will have their vison decrease and some of them can go blind if there is full detachment.
A Note from the Foster: Oscar is a lab that arrived to rescue in very poor condition. He was rushed into surgery shortly after arriving because he developed bloat. He did develop some pneumonia after surgery and on top of that was very underweight.
Oscar has been slowly recovering from all that plus the mental trauma he has gone through in his past. He was pretty timid and unsure of things when I first brought him home and he is still working on building confidence.
Since being in my home, Oscar has discovered that the thing he loves the most is me.. he is your textbook Velcro dog, he always wants to be in the same area as me and will check in with me often to make sure I am still there. He loves affection and getting pet, he will flip over for belly rubs and lean in for all the snuggles. He is still young and sometimes will become mouthy if he gets too excited but he has always been pretty gentle. For a young lab, I have not observed him to be high energy as you may expect a lab to be but he also has not learned how to play yet so that may come with time. He has discovered that he likes to pick things up with his mouth, he will carry around toys every so often but also still learning about which items are toys and which items are not.
Oscar is food motivated, he has not learned any tricks yet and still learning the basics on things. He is kennel trained. Still working on potty training but doing well with management and reduced water intake. He does keep his kennel clean during the day and overnight.
Oscar has met a few other dogs while staying with me and is out regularly with another one of my labs. He for the most part can coexist with other dogs with supervision just fine however I feel he would be happiest if he were the only dog. He does have resource guarding tendencies towards other dogs and will get grumpy and growly over things such as the water bowl, toys, bones, food, or even attention from me- he does not want to share. He has been easily redirected with a "ah ah- no" from me and then he will move on and not escalate. If he were to go to a home with another dog, that family would need to be prepared to offer lots of time to acclimate him in and be able and willing to manage the resources in the home to prevent any scuffles. Oscar does not have any reactivity and will pass by dogs and be around them with no issues as long as they are not in his personal space.
Oscar is such a sweetheart, with more time and guidance he will blossom into a really great companion for a family.
It will also be important to note that at Oscar’s most recent vet visit, it was found that he has early stages of retinal detachment so it is very possible that he could go blind at some point in his life. It does not affect him very much currently; I just make sure to offer him extra guidance when needed if he is having trouble seeing things.
Oscar has been through a lot in his short life so far and is so deserving of finding a loving home where he can be spoiled and loved on, and learn what the good life is all about!

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
