Multiple ocular anomalies occur in dogs as either a genetic or congenital abnormality. Potential abnormalities may include a small eye (microphthalmia) and abnormal intraocular structures (small lens, irregular pupil, cataract, retinal detachment, and others). The visual ability in these patients is dependent on the specific anomalies and their severity. This condition is not progressive, although patients with severe abnormalities may develop additional abnormalities and a further decrease in vision. No treatment is available for this condition and the goal is to manage the patient's comfort.
A note from the foster: Sue aka Suzy is ready to accept adoption inquiries! She’s been with me for a couple weeks, and has made significant progress in adjusting to life as a much loved pet after her years as a commercial breeder dog. Suzy allows me to pick her up, and she does take treats from me; however, she is still very timid around all other humans. She has learned how to go up and down stairs. Her potty training is going ver well as long as she gets out every three hours. You have to be observant and get her out if she starts sniffing the floor while going back and forth.
As for her vision, Suzy can see with her left eye. Her field of vision is probably narrow given the position of her left pupil, but she tilts her head when necessary to find a treat or observe one of the other dogs. Suzy learns a lot by simply observing my resident dogs. As such, I believe Suzy would do best in with another dog. She’s not afraid of other dogs, but has not been around cats, so I don’t know about Suzy and cats? Suzy is a barker, which is not surprising given her breed.
She knows the schedule here and starts pouncing and tapping her front legs when she knows it’s feeding time.
Suzy’s personality is slowly emerging. I’m seeing her quiet sweetness combined with a sassy confidence that puts a smile on my face. It’s clear to me, as a visually impaired person, that Suzy uses all of her residual vision, but also uses other cues to help her navigate the world. She’s light sensitive because of her non- reactive pupils, so I talk to her more when we are outside on a sunny day. This helps her to know where I am. Her adopter must be patient to allow Suzy to transition from here to her forever home. The reward for your patience will be huge, because you will see Suzy blossom into a loving, sassy confident tiny prancing lady living the life she truly deserves!

Adoption Status: Is this dog available? Submitting an application is the best first step to learning if a dog is still available. There is a chance this dog could have a pending adoption when your application is submitted, however our team will offer approved applicants to be put on a waiting list for that dog. Additionally, we can make recommendations on other dogs that may be a match. Pending adoptions do not mean the adoption is finalized. Why did we implement this change? We implemented this update because, unfortunately, dogs were pending for applicants for several weeks and then the applicant would change their mind. This happens more often with puppies, as applications are submitted impulsivly more often for them. Our process is great because it takes a little time, so impulsive decisions fade. However it was unfortunate for the dogs, and the foster homes, as then the process needed to be re-started. By securing a wait-list we are able to move forward more quickly if a pending adoption falls through. This is a new process for us, so your feedback along the way is helpful! Thank you for supporting rescue and adoption!
